The thing that God asked Abraham to do is probably one of the hardest things He could ask – to give up His only son.
The twist was that the son was the promise. What God was really asking was “do you love ME more than what I’ve promised you”.
It’s so easy to hold onto hope that God will fulfill His promise – He will, even if not the way we expect – but what we really need to put our hope in is not the promise for the good stuff He wants to give us, but in HIM. Just him. Gosh that’s tough.
